is it okay to bury leftover food in the ground for plants?
if leftover food decomposes anyways…couldn’t we just bury it back into the ground and have the energy or nutrients or whatever seep back into the ground? rather than dumping it into the trash? is that bad? will it kill or harm plants?
while it’s ok to do this, and more people should, it’s important to know that some plants do not like some foods. Roses don’t like citrus fruits, but they love bananas, and almost all plants don’t enjoy meat products of any kind. You can start your own fruit and veg compost pretty much anywhere, because for the plants to recieve fast nutrients, it needs to be decomposing. Get a bucket with a lid, dump your scraps in there (no meat or dairy products), seal it after and leave it outside (or in your laundry if you have nowhere else, however it will smell a little). YOu can speed things up by adding earthworms also. When it is all brown and a little gross looking, it’s a good time to add it to the soil around your plants.
