Can the Yankees defy all the odds – a quick preview of the situation in Group C of the World Cup 2010
ENGLAND
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham)
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ledley King (Tottenham), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa).
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), James Milner (Aston Villa), Scott Parker (West Ham), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City)
Forwards: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Comment: The only line that is complete world class in England is the defense – Cole, Ferdinand, Terry and Johnson means a wall for the enemies. And under Capello management, this could be sufficient for a breakthrough in the semifinal or final. But there is lots of doubt in all other lines. Hart is just too young and inexperienced to go straight through a starting position. The problem is the rest of the goalkeepeers lack his qualities. The midfield – apart from Lampard and to some extent the not in-form Gerrard, there are not people who can make a difference in an important fixture. As for the strikers – Capello should stick with Sir Alex tactics – Rooney alone in the dark.
ALGERIA
Goalkeepers: Lounes Gaouaoui (ASO Chlef), Faouzi Chaouchi (Entente Setif), Mohamed Lamine Zemmamouche (MC Alger), M’bohi Rais Ouheb (Slavia Sofia, Bulgaria)
Defenders: Abdelkader Laifaoui (Entente Setif), Madjid Bougherra (Rangers, Scotland), Carl Medjani (Ajaccio, France), Rafik Halliche (Nacional Madeira, Portugal), Anther Yahia (Bochum, Germany), Habib Belaid (Boulogne-sur-Mer, France), Nadir Belhadj (Portsmouth, England), Djamel Mesbah (Lecce, Italy), Hocine Metref (ES Setif), Mohamed Meftah (JS Kabylie)
Midfielders: Hassan Yebda (Portsmouth, England), Medhi Lacen (Racing Santander, Spain), Yazid Mansouri (Lorient, France), Adlene Guedioura (on loan at Wolverhampton, England from Charleroi, Belgium), Riad Boudebouz (Sochaux, France), Djamel Abdoun (Nantes, France), Fouad Kadir (Valenciennes, France), Mourad Meghni (Lazio, Italy), Karim Ziani (Wolfsburg, Germany), Karim Matmour (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Lazhar Hadj Aissa (ES Setif), Khaled Lemmouchia (ES Setif),
Strikers: Abdelkader Ghezzal (Siena, Italy), Rafik Djebbour (AEK Athens, Greece), Rafik Saifi (Istres, France), Amri Chadli (Kaiserslautern, Germany)
Comment: Algeria is one of the few African squads that could be praised about its defense. There are pure class acts in the face of Bougherra and Belhadj, while Halliche will add to a more than a decent line. We all know that there are no famous keepers from this part of the continent, but M’bohi Rais went on trial at Man Utd this month, while he is reported to be chased by Newcastle too. Maybe he could provide a much needed stability. In the upfront there is not much to say – the team should stick with one striker (Ghezzal) playing on counters. The midfield, like the defense looks decent – Matmour, Ziani, Yebda are all suitable players for playing on counters. With such a squad the team will not concede many goals.
SLOVENIA
Goalkeepers: Samir Handanovic (Udinese), Jasmin Handanovic (Mantova), Aleksander Seliga (Sparta Rotterdam), Jan Koprivec (Maribor)
Defenders: Bojan Jokic (Chievo Verona), Marko Suler (Ghent), Bostjan Cesar (Grenoble), Branko Ilic (Lokomotiv Moscow), Matej Mavric (Koblenz), Dejan Kelhar (Cercle Brugge), Elvedin Dzinic (Maribor), Miso Brecko (Cologne), Aleksandar Rajcevic (Koper), Suad Filekovic (Maribor)
Midfielders: Andraz Kirm (Wisla Krakow), Andrej Komac (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Rene Krhin (Inter Milan), Mirnes Sisic (Giannina), Darjan Matic (Rapid Bucharest), Dare Vrsic (Koper), Dalibor Stevanovic (Vitesse Arnhem), Robert Koren (West Bromwich Albion), Aleksander Radosavljevic (Larissa), Valter Birsa (Auxerre)
Forwards: Milivoje Novakovic (Cologne), Zlatko Dedic (VfL Bochum), Zlatan Ljubijankic (Ghent), Nejc Pecnik (Nacional), Miran Burgic (AIK Solna), Tim Matavz (Groningen)
Comment: Slovenia striking power looks impressive. They can count on Novakovic, whose height and physical presence could be used against both Algeria and USA. Matavz has been deadly throughout the season for Groningen, and will be pushy to put performances to secure a transfer to some prestigious European club. Handanovic between the sticks is pretty solid as he has good physics and impressive reflex. But Slovenia lacks quality in both defense and midfield. In these departments they could well suffer even against Algeria.
USA
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton)
Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)
Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), Jose Torres (Pachuca)
Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla), Eddie Johnson (Aris Thessaloniki)
Comment: USA could once again be the plesant surprise in this WC. The team is more experienced and is boiling with quality now. Goalkeeper position is no problem – they have option that even the better European teams could envy. The defense line is OK, not particularly fascinating, but will do to make it to the 1/8 finals. The midfield carries lots of offensive power, at great speed. The other teams should make sure they have good full backs to cover Donovan, Beasely and company. As for the offensive department – Altidore and Johnson will do a good work. Lots will be counted on Jozym but he will get assistance from the midfield, so a passage from the group should not surprise us.
